My daughter came home from a colour run at school in her new ASICS. She had a perfectly good pair of old sneakers sitting by the door. She wore the new ones.

I wasn't going to throw them out, and I wasn't going to stand at the sink scrubbing pink dye out of white mesh. So I started researching how to wash them in the machine without wrecking them.

That is when I found shoe wash bags. Every one I could find was yellow, orange or green. All I could think about was the red sock that turns a white wash pink. Surely someone made one in white, or close to it. Nobody did.

If I couldn't find it, other mums couldn't either.

So I looked properly at what was on offer. Zips that pop open mid-cycle. Bright linings, and not a word about whether the colour stays put. Sizing that fits nobody in particular. Nobody talking to households that run hard.

The tools existed. None of them were made properly for the life we actually live.
